Type IV Portland cement is specifically designed for massive concrete placements, such as in dams, where low heat of hydration is essential. This type of cement generates less heat during the curing process compared to other types, which minimizes the risk of thermal cracking—a crucial consideration in large structures that have significant mass and volume. By limiting the heat produced, Type IV cement allows for a slower, more controlled setting process, making it ideal for these extensive applications where the integrity of the structure must be maintained.

The other types of cement have different properties and are suited for various applications. For example, Type I is ordinary Portland cement for general use; Type II is used when moderate sulfate resistance is needed, and Type V is used in environments with high sulfate exposure.
